SIXTY YEARS OF GIDAN SADA
Exactly on the 16th of August 1956 Alhaji Muhammadu Sada arrived the historic town of Kankiya to assume office as Kankiyan Katsina, the District Head of Kankiya.
He drove into the town in convoy of his many Aides, loyalists and well wishers with Alhaji Bature Batagarawa rightly seated in the front of the car not as orderly but a close confidant (Malamin Voucher) who was to be the Accounts officer of the District office. Today we are marking the 60th Anniversary of the arrival and stay of this marvellous leader and the Dynasty he established.
In Katsina, the name Sada is snynomous to royalty, and the name of Kankiya Muhammadu Sada is no different because the name 'Sada' is traceable to Sarki Muhammadu Dikko's older brother by name Muhammadu Sada who became Durbi after Gidado was stripped of that title by his long standing enemy Emir Musa and given to his (Emir Musa) son Yero. However, after the death of Sada, Sarki Abubakar appointed Dikko as Durbi. That shows how Kankiya Muhammadu Sada took the name after his uncle, the late Durbi Sada.
Kankiya Muhammadu Sada is the Son of the 9th Fulani Emir of Katsina as well as the 1st Emir from the Sullubawa Dynasty, Sarki Muhammadu Dikko (1906-1944). Kankiya Sada is the older brother of Sarki Usman Nagogo although they grew up together.
Kankiya Sada started his working career as a school teacher from 1928 to 1932. He later went for a Native Authority Course on Works. Upon completion, he was appointed Mataimakin Wazirin Ayyuka (Deputy Works Supritendent) in the Katsina Native Authority. His exceptional qualities on the new job prompted his promotion to Wazirin Ayyuka (Works Supritendent) and Councillor for Works in 1935. Alhaji Sada was a Member of the Northern Nigeria House of Chiefs under the late Premier.
Early in 1939 Alhaji Sada became the first Sarkin Sullubawa and District Head of Kaita. He immediately moved to Kaita as the District Head where he reigned until 1956. His Stay in Kaita as District Head made some of his children to bear Kaita as their surname. The former Kaduna state Governor Alhaji Lawal Kaita is one of them.
The historic Kankiya town had many District Heads starting from the Maguzawas who had two District Heads, Gunguma and Kiya, they ruled from 1770 to 1847. After them were the Fulani's who had 14 District Heads begining with Haruna Dan Tanko through to Danwaire from 1847 up to 1897. Then the Dallazawa took over in the year 1897 up to 1906. They had Umaru, Bello and Yerima Abdu.
However, when the Sullubawa took over the reigns in 1906 starting with Kankiya Nuhu (1906-1956) through to Kankiya Iro (1956) they never let go to date. Interestingly when Alhaji Muhammadu Sada Nadada became the 22nd District Head of Kankiya and the 3rd Kankiyan Katsina from the Sullubawa ruling house in 1956 the trend changed from just Sullubawa to Sullubawan Gidan Sada till date.
The dynastic style of Gidan Sada is awesome eventhough amongst the Sullubawas. It has been successive without hitch or interruption since 1956 when Kankiya Muhammadu Sada became the Kankiyan Katsina after Kankiya Iro.
In 1956 following a redeployment exercise carried out in the Emirate which affected the then Sarkin Musawa and others, Sarkin Sullubawa Muhammadu Sada was equally affected. Though his redeployment from Kaita to Kankiya became so easy for the Emirate then because population was the measure used to determine both the movement and the salary of District Heads.
Coincidently enough Kaita and Kankia were almost same in population. Therefore Kankiya Sada was moved from Kaita to Kankiya and placed on a salary of £99.
Being an astute administrator in the Native Authority and an experienced bloodlined traditional ruler, he got himself prepared to make a difference in Kankia. That, made Kankiya Sada to bring along with him a large number of people to Kankiya as Administrative Assistants, Aides and other Supporting staffs. Such was a unique and peculiar arrangement made by him to ensure stability of tenure and a reliable machinery of governance.
According to legends, He came along with about 100 people. However, my research revealed the number was inclusive of women, children and other dependants of the staffs. Prominent amongst such people were Baraya Yusuf who was the first to be appointed as Magaji and village head of Tafashiya.
Others included Sarkin Fada Sule and his son Alhaji Usman Babba Kaita, Alhaji Musa Dan Baraya, Alhaji Yuguda, Balan Kazaure, Alhaji Usman Turaki who later became the Magaji of Doka and his son Alhaji Abdu Usman Turaki the present Magaji of Doka.
These people were officially appointed by Kankiya Sada as Wakilan Kankiya in the office and placed in the Native Authority Payroll. Other supporting staffs included amongst others, Kwakwala Dogari, Koje, Sani Bugaje Danzuru, Atti Gandal, Madawaki Dahiru etc.
Other members of the palace worthy of mention are Sarkin Dawa, Sarkin Bai, Kilishi, Shantali, Alhaji Shuaibu Kaita, Amadu Kiyashi, Alhaji Ummaru Tandu, Zagi and the rest.
Kankiya Sada settled and went on discharging his administrative responsibilities along side restructuring and reorganising the development of the vast District which comprises of 21 Village Heads from Rimaye - Sukuntuni - Kunduru - Gyaza - Kafinsoli - Tafashiya - Kafindangi - Faquwa - Bauranya - Kofa - Tsa - Magam - Yashe - Kusada - Kaikai - Dudunni - Boko - Nassarawa - Gachi and Galadima in the metropolis. Muhammadu Sada never relent in mobilising his subject to support and take part in every government policy especially Education, Agriculture and Commerce. Kankiya Sada was identified by his subjects as good adjudicate that many prefer to report their cases and family disputes to the palace than Ofishin Yan Doka. His stance on discipline was extraordinary and that endeared him to many parents and children as well. He was an adherent of family values to the extent that his grand children must frequent the palace or even stay there.
The constitution have long been unfair to traditional rulers interms of formal political power, but that distinguished mornach Kankiya Sada continued to command respect from his subjects and had considerable influence especially as he maintained his monarchical style and independent activities without molestation and harrassment on his subjects. Such an outstanding quality paved way for his numerous achievements on the throne.
During the reign of Kankiya Sada, Kankiya District and especially Kankiya town achieved alot. Prominent amongst them was the creation of Kankia Local Government itself in 1975 with Alh. Usman Liman as pioneer Chairman which brought the 3 Districts of Kankia, Ingawa and Musawa together with Kankia as the Headquaters. Others include
-The Establishment of Divisional Police Force Headquaters
-The Establishment of Local Education Authoriry, Kankia
-The Establishment of School of Health Technology, Kankia
-The Establishment of Government Girls Secondary School, Kankia
-The Establishment of Government Day Secondary School, Kankia
-The Establishment of Kankia Post office and the outstanding role played by Kankiya Sada in transforming the age long Annual Kafnsoli Agric Show into a more effective and fascinating one during his time.
Kankiya Muhammadu Sada is a leader whose administrative techniques lead Kankia to attaining greater heights.
His foresight made the Emirate to always consider Kankia District first. His cordial relationship with government officials further prove his leadership traits beyond reasonable doubt.
Kankiya Sada was an Administrator, Leader, Father and indeed the builder of modern Kankiya. He lived a happy and successful royal life until his death in 1981.
He left behind a large family with many children and grand children too numerous to mention in this little piece athough amongst them are

Gidan Sada Continued after his demise in 1981 when his eldest son Alhaji Hassan Sada (Commander) became the 4th and 2nd Kankiyan Katsina from both the Sullubawa ruling clan and Gidan Sada inheriting the vast District and the good works of his late father. However, the creation of Kusada and Rimaye Districts out of Kankiya District in 1999 reduced the size of the Kankia district and the number of Magaddai came down to 8 from 21. Kankiya Hassan quickly obtained approval and added 5 more Dagattai to the remaining 8 thus bringing the number to 13. Those added were Doka Alhaji Usman Turaki, Dan Doro Alhaji Hassan, Kauyen Maina Alhaji Surajo, Magajin Gari (metropolis) Abdullahi Hassan Sada and Maigarin Jauga.
Kankiya Hassan Sada reigned until his death in 2006.
Then Alhaji Abdu Kaita another son of Kankiya Sada was enthroned as the 3rd Kankiyan Katsina from Gidan Sada in 2006. He served up to 2009.
In 2009 Alhaji Musa Hassan Sada fondly known as Musa Sada, the son of late Kankiya Alhaji Hassan Sada and a grandson of late Kankiya Muhammadu Sada was appointed the 6th Kankiyan Katsina from the Sullubuwa clan and the 4th from Gidan Sada. Kankiya Musa Hassan, just like his grand father Kankiya Sada, is an experienced administrator, a cool and level headed royalist that believe more in the ideals of honour.
He is a custodian of culture and virtue.
His quest for development and hate for idealness lead him to establish the famous and vibrant Kankiya Development Innitiative KYDI an NGO for Kankiya people charged principally with women/youth empowerment programme as well as other developmental projects. In a nutshell this is the 60 year old GIDAN SADA in Kankiya.
It is therefore my pleasure to associate with the ruling Gidan Sada of Kankia as they celebrate the Sixty Years Anniversary of Gidan Sada this 16th day of August 2016. Accept my congratulation.
Allah Ya jiqan Kankiya Muhammadu Sada Nadada, Allah Ya jiqan Kankiya Hassan Sada, Allah Ya jiqan Kankiya Abdu Kaita, Allah Ya ja zamanin Kankiya Musa Hassan Sada.
